In Washington, teens are empowered to drive cars, get jobs, and seek confidential healthcare all without the oversight of a parent or guardian. In Family Court however, anyone under 18 is muzzled by a justice system that bans youth from testifying, or even attending court hearings. In this workshop, we will explore the relationship between consent and youth voice; and delve into how youth experiences are not just sidelined but silenced in custody and domestic violence hearings, while the arguments of parents and "experts" are prioritized. Our exploration will be interactive and grounded by case studies of real families who are fighting for safety and justice through our Family Courts. Through lively discussion and activities, we will imagine possibilities for reform and action together.
